CAFO Update to Members (June 2016)

CAFO chair, Domenico Iannidinardo, and Geoff Regan, Speaker of the House of Commons.

In early May several CAFO members got together in Ottawa for what has become an annual event. A series of meetings were set up with Members of Parliament from ridings where CAFO members’ land is located or where CAFO members have offices and other facilities.

Key MPs on various Parliamentary Committees and Critics of portfolios like environment, natural resources, rural affairs and wildlife also met with us. CAFO members met with officials from Environment and Climate Change Canada, Parks Canada and Natural Resources Canada.

One of the highlights of the two days in Ottawa was a reception hosted by the Honourable Geoff Regan, Speaker of the House of Commons and MP for Halifax West

In addition to several CAFO members, representatives from the Canadian Federation of Woodlot Owners and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture attended the reception. About twenty MPs attended and heard firsthand about the challenges CAFO members face and discussed opportunities to work with CAFO.

The Honourable Geoff Regan talked about the importance of private forest land and the challenges forest owners face in managing their land in close proximity to Canada’s largely urban population.

Speaker Regan mentioned the passion CAFO members bring to their efforts to manage their forests for a whole host of products in addition to timber. He highlighted private forests as a source of water and watershed protection, carbon storage and sequestration, recreation and wildlife habitat.

The fourth CAFO AGM was held May 4, 2016 at the Lord Elgin Hotel in Ottawa as part of two days of meetings with MPs and other officials.

Eight CAFO members attended the meeting either in person or by phone. The usual business items were discussed including the approval of the 2016 budget.

Members spent some time at the end of the meeting talking about plans and priorities for the coming year. It was agreed that building on the momentum of two days of meetings in Ottawa and continuing to connect with the new federal government would be the priorities for 2016. Continuing our cooperation with the Canadian Federation of Agriculture and the Canadian Federation of Woodlot Owners will be a key part of our efforts.
